One of my friends
is a black belt in Karate, which is a great self defense technique for a
girl. I am also, for that matter, totally in, for girls taking some
kind of training in martial arts. So, impressed with her martial arts
prowess, I told her that its great that she knows how to fight. I asked
her what if there are more than two guys that she had to deal with.
Considering that she could easily lay anyone down with her kicks and
punches. What she replied got me into fits of laughter. She laughed and
replied by saying that if 2 guys try to mess with me at one time, I will
probably run off! And she added that this was told to her by her
trainer himself!
But jokes apart, even if you do not have to deal with bad guys, whether you are a man or a woman, in these perilous times, you need to know some self defense tactics and techniques. May be the pendulum is tilted more towards women, when it comes to self defense. Although it is not the case that men do not need to protect themselves. But all said and done, there is a difference between the tactics and techniques. Tactics could not necessarily mean that you are aware of the techniques, as techniques has a different and specific connotation. So first there will be description of a few smart tactics for self defense.

DO NOT BE AFRAID
Whatever situation you are in, do not be afraid! Or at least never let the other person know that you are afraid. I know this is easier said than done. But if people, you want to sail through the situation safely, this is the golden rule. Do not give the advantage to the opponent by letting the fear grip you. Instead, channelize that into anticipation, to help you react fast.
Be Alert
This is another extremely important rule, if you want to survive in this bad world. Be it an unknown place or you are walking alone at night or you are confronted by a stranger, be alert. Keep your mind ticking on various scenarios you could find yourself in and how would you react to that.
Be Confident
If you are not intimated by the dire situation you are in, and are as confident as you are otherwise, then its great. Or else, here again, being pretentious will come to your rescue. The least you can do is pretend that you are confident, and have a kind of counter attack. That will hopefully deter the assailant from taking any further step. Use an authoritative tone, without quivering or anything.
Don't Give Up
Never ever give up and leave your fate in the hands of the opponent or the assailant. Instill the confidence in yourself, that whoever has to survive from this scenario, that has going to be you.
Keep a Pepper Spray
This is specifically for girls. Always keep a pepper spray in your purse, because you never know where and when you would encounter a situation where you would need them.
However, going through a fitness routine everyday and practicing some sort of self defense techniques like martial arts, will lead to a better capability of dealing with undesirable situations.

A few self defense techniques include employing punches and kicks, which are a part of martial arts like jujitsu, tae-kwon-do, karate and others. But, if you do not know these, for instance, and some assailant grabs you by hands? What would you do? Well, be calm and think how you could use your legs and your mighty head. If the assailant is facing your back and trying to grab you, you can kick like a mule or horse. Slamming your heel backwards will hit the assailant's knee. That will lead to the loss of the balance of the assailant, giving you the breather to save yourself.
Another thing you should remember is to always keep your hands up and block any attack coming your way. For girls, one of the best self defense tactics would be to hit the groin. It instantly cripples the opponent. That is one of the weak spots. Aim for all weak spots.
If you use your brain, any small thing or an inconsequential thing like a pen or an umbrella can be of huge help. If you have to deal with an opponent whose size is intimidating, stay alert and keep your mind calm. Remember David and Goliath? You can still win. Neck attack, palm shots, using elbows is a great way to combat in life-threatening situations. And remember the force and the spot where you fit is extremely important.
You can try these tactics with the help of your friends as dummies as a conditioning for real situations. But hey do not hit your friends too hard!
