Don't Let Obstacles Stop You from Improving Your Fitness

By Patrick Priston

It can be overwhelming to begin a new fitness program and hit that proverbial brick wall. You may discover that you don't have the time you want for your exercise routine. These are the obstacles we know exist and that we need to overcome them. We will talk about some ways you can overcome the most common obstacles many will run into.

One apparently strange but not uncommon reason people don't exercise is that they feel too out of shape to begin. This may sound silly, but it's a real concern for many people. It's actually natural to feel anxious or a little intimidated about exercise if you haven't done it for years. Perhaps you tried something that was too advanced for your level and concluded you couldn't keep up with an exercise program. The trick is to begin at a pace that's comfortable for you, whatever that may be. Your doctor can advise you about what type of exercise is appropriate if you have any illness or serious condition. One of the best exercises to start with is walking, either outdoors or on a treadmill, and you can begin at any pace that's comfortable for you. Eventually, plateaus happen to everyone who participates in any type of exercise.

An example of a plateau is a runner who can't seem to get beyond a certain number of miles. You may only be able to lift a certain amount of weight and no more, if you lift weights. Making even minor changes to your routine is the best way to get past this obstacle. You will be able to get past your limitations when you work your body in a slightly different manner. It's important to know that you still benefit from the regular exercise bike workouts even when you seem to be stuck at a certain level.

It's most common for people to avoid exercise or quit after a small amount of time when they aren't happy doing it. Find an activity you enjoy to avoid this situation. Sometimes we have to stop and remember what we enjoyed as teenagers in order to find that perfect activity.

There is bound to be at least one activity you enjoyed doing. Perhaps you enjoy bike riding, racket ball, martial arts or swimming? If you're having fun, you won't think of exercise as a chore. Recognizing your personal problems and obstacles can help you reach your fitness goals. You have to be patient with yourself, and be satisfied with any progress you make, even if it's not as rapid as you'd prefer. You're not trying to compete with others when it comes to improving your fitness. As long as you are moving forward, you're going in the right direction. These tips will help keep you on track to your fitness goals by helping you overcome any obstacles.
