BJJ And The Health Concerns That Come With It

By Jhonny Hudson

As far as sports go, BJJ has taken its place among the most enjoyable ones out there. It belongs to the category of martial arts and it can be considered as a combat sport. Those who would like to learn this art and don the BJJ GI will surely love it. There may be times when you find yourself encountering less than desirable characters or people. If you knew BJJ, you will be more able to defend and protect yourself. You could even probably foil a robbery attempt if you know even a little bit of BJJ. Many people have to venture out into dangerous territories and shady alleys. Knowing the dangers that lurk in these shadowy places, they decide to learn this sport.

There is no reason why you shouldn't also give this art a shot. But just like any other sport, this art will also have its own advantages and disadvantages. BJJ has some health issues that are usually associated with it. It is fun and enjoyable, true; however, you cannot do away with some of the health risks that usually come with it. It is only wise that you be informed of these risks before you go off and concentrate on learning all you could about this art. It is the goal of this article to make you see clearer what you would be most likely to encounter when you are wearing a BJJ GI and start learning the art. Skin disorders and cauliflower ear problems are only a few of the health issues you'll have to be prepared for.

When you are performing this art, you will mainly be using your head to attack the opponent. One need only look at various television shows and some actual matches to find the head getting much of the brunt of the attacks. Make sure you are very careful when dealing with an opponent during a match. Impairment of hearing is simply one of the possibilities when this martial art is done improperly or wrongly by anyone wearing a BJJ GI. The ear could become swollen, and this could also lead to other types of ear damage. The ear cartilage that is swollen might sometimes tear out or get separated from the perichondrium. It's very vital to note that the perichondrium is an important part of the ear. It supplies a good amount of nutrients to the ear cartilage.

Permanent swelling of this region of the ear is also sometimes possible. The condition becomes quite serious when this happens. This condition is referred to as cauliflower ear formation. You can expect to be saddled with this condition for the rest of your life. If you wish to prevent the formation of cauliflower ear, then you can wear a protective gear for the head as part of your BJJ GI. If you're looking for skull protection, this is your best option. Dermal area concerns will also be more prevalent aside from the ear and skull.

Prolonged practice of BJJ is also bound to put a lot of strain to the muscles, to the extent that the strain could only be described as severe. But it is the skin problems that you should worry about the most. When there is too much of skin to skin contact and rubbing, there will be skin abrasion. When you are not hygienic, your BJJ GI is not laundered properly, and when you use unclean mats for practicing BJJ, this might also lead to problems. Infections such as ringworm, staph, or herpes are also entirely possible, although those are rare occurrences. BJJ is surely a fantastic art, but you need to understand the risk of practicing it.
