By Ethel Harris

Every summer parents are faced with a similar dilemma, how to make a summer day not boring for kids. Many days are spent at the pool during this time, but some creative pool party games for kids can spice up this monotonous summer activity. Many of these games are cheap or even free, and can keep kids busy for hours.

A fun game for anyone who knows the dog paddle swim is dog races. The game is played by dividing children into even teams and setting up the pool into lanes using rope. The teams will stand behind their lane and take turns jumping in and swimming across. When they get to the end, they must bark like a dog three times before their teammate can jump in for their turn. The first team with all their members to finish and bark will win the races.

Marco polo is a game that can be played with children who aren't strong swimmers. This game is played in shallow water to insure safety. One child is picked to be the finder and must keep their eyes closed at all times. The remaining children will have a short time to find a hiding spot in the water. The finder will call out the word marco and the hidden children must respond polo. The finder has to find a child just by listening to the direction of the voice.

Pinatas can also be a great accessory to any water party. Prefill a pinata with fun water toys like goggles, squirt gun, or even sunglasses. Have an adult hang the pinata above the pool, but close enough to the edge to where participants can attempt to bust it when jumping in. Line all the kids around the water and have them take turns trying to bust it. Once the pinata is busted open, all kids can jump in after its loot.

Relay races are an easy activity for strong swimmers. Divide the children into teams and create lanes using rope. The participants will jump in, swim the length of the pool and back, and the next child will then begin their turn. The first team to have all swimmers complete the race wins.

Another fun and free activity is to hold contests. These contests can be for the best dive, cannonball, or even belly flop. The easiest way to do this is to split the participants into two groups. Then have the groups take turns being the judges for the other group. This is a simple, but fun for everyone game.

Parents can also purchase water games for a low cost. Some popular purchased games include inflatable basketball nets and water baseballs. Another common game is water volleyball, but this will require a net and ball to be purchased. Treasure hunts are great for small children and can be done by buying small sinking and floating toys.

This list of pool party games for kids is a great starter list for parents looking to spice up their summers. The best thing about water games is their low cost and easy setup. These suggestions are sure to keep your children from the dreaded, boring summers of the past.
