Cheerleading uniforms are distinguishable at each sporting event no matter what size or institution. If one goes to high school, the cheerleaders wear the school colors and school logo at all sporting events. The costume that is worn by these ladies are well known for their short skirts and form fitting vests that are made with bright colors and logos as well as the pom-poms that are used only in this sport.

With the advent of cheerleaders in the late 19th century in Princeton University, cheerleaders were synonymous to the team's mascot. They would wear long ankle length skirts that were made with the colors of the school that they attended and a cardigan type sweater with the first letter of the schools' name sewn onto the cardigan. They would walk around the stadiums with megaphones to call out their cheers so that the crowd was encouraged to copy them in loud voices. The symbol of the megaphone is still used today as it was the identifying tool that cheerleaders used at the very beginning.

As time progressed, the skirts would become shorter and the cardigans would become shorter and closer fitting. During the 1950's and 1960's, the long ankle length skirt was chopped into half so that it came to the knee. The girls would wear sneakers or saddle shoes so that they could perform athletic dances and tricks during their routines.

The cheerleaders in the 70's wore sneakers instead of saddle shoes and their dresses were of lighter material that allowed for easier movement. The sweater was closely fitted so that it was more flattering. They were also shorter than the preceding style so that the bottom of the sweater did not overlap the skirt.

Instead of saddle shoes, the women started to wear sneakers in the 1970's and their costumes were made from cotton or lighter fabric that allowed for easier movement. The skirts were made a bit shorter in a pleated fashion. The sweater changed quite dramatically in this decade as they were streamlined and closer fitting which was more flattering as it tapered to the body.

The skirt is a customized skirt which is made from the same material as the top. IT can have various styles. Many skirts are made with pleats or in a simple A-Line fashion which has no pleats. The general rule around the length of the skirt is that it comes to mid-thigh or where the fingers of the cheerleader stop when her arm is at her side.

Traditionally, the skirt starts at the waist and stops at mid-thigh, but there are some skirts that begin at the navel area. It should be high enough to touch the bottom of the shell. Low rise skirts have become popular and worn with the normal length shell leaving a gap between the skirt and the shell creating that bare midriff look.

The skirts are very short for safety reasons because it can be a danger to the athlete if the skirt is longer especially in tumbles and other stunts that are pulled by these athletes. Tattoos and body piercing is prohibited within the sports and if a cheerleader has a tattoo they are required to cover it with skin colored make up or by a bandage. This is an extremely competitive and popular sport and all the cheerleading uniforms are different from team to team however; no doubt is left as to which institution they represent.
