Basic Facts Regarding Acls Houston Residents May Wish To Know

By Tamika Quinn

There are a number of things regarding acls Houston residents need to know if intending to undergo this training. ACLS stands for advanced cardiac life support. It is a set of clinical procedures that are carried out as an intervention during stroke, cardiac arrest as well as other medical emergencies. Any person who has undertaken a course in Advanced Cardiac Life Support has the requisite knowledge and skills for carrying out these procedures.

Training in Advanced Cardiac Life Support is very important for healthcare professionals. This is because they are most likely to be faced with these situations in their everyday life. Knowledge of Advanced Cardiac Life Support protocols may turn out to be life-saving in most of these situations. Most hospitals ensure that persons working in critical care, emergency medicine and intensive care units take the course.

Students undertaking the training are expected to learn a number of things at the end of the course. Among other competencies, they are required to be skilled in giving chest compressions, properly fitting and using a bag-and-mask, maintaining the airway open and properly communicating with the other members of a resuscitation team. Prompt recognition of cardiac and respiratory arrest and their management is greatly emphasized.

An initial provider course takes between 10 and 12 hours. During this time participants are taught various skills, they are given an opportunity to practise them and are tested by the trainers. If one was previously trained and need to renew their qualification, this takes much shorter (usually 5-6hours). It is recommended that every instructor handles 6 students using 2 manikins. Classroom-based approach may also be used. In such a setting, video images are used to help in the acquisition of skills.

Ideally, a number of stations are set up to be used by the learners. At each station, a student is expected to learn a particular skill. They are provided with a clinical scenario to which they are expected to respond appropriately by instituting the required interventional measures. All these scenarios require the students to participate actively as a way of reinforcing the learnt skills. The classroom-based approach may be used for learners who can interact as groups and give feedback to the instructors.

Once the course has been completed successfully, the participant is issued with a course completion card. To get this card, students need to demonstrate skills competency in the required stations, they have to pass the CPR and AED skills and should also be skilled in bag and mask ventilation. An additional requirement is that they must pass a Megacode test as well as a written test. The card is valid for two years beyond which a renewal course must be undertaken.

Persons that have successfully undertaken the course should undertake continuous education so that they are aware of the most current practice in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The American Heart Association, AHA, offers this kind of training. This program is accredited by the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services, CECBEMS. The AHA does not determine the costs of these courses but suggests retail prices to its authorised dealers.

There are two internationally recognised types of acls Houston residents may choose to be trained in. They include the ACLS experienced provider and the HeartCode ACLS. Both are equally demanding with the learner required to gain a huge amount of knowledge and to be very competent in the required skills. Basic Life Support training is recognised as an important component of ACLS and persons who wish to have training of ACLS will be well advised to first get training in BLS.
