How A Liposome Helps In The Absorption Of Vitamins And Medications

By Wanda Vaughn

Since the 1970s, liposomes have been used by medical professionals to deliver medication directly to the area or organ where it is needed. It was also discovered that liposomes provided a slow release effect, which lowered the adverse affects of some medications, especially cancer treatments. More recently, liposomes have been utilized in the cosmetic and nutrient supplement industries, since it was discovered that liposome technology greatly increases the absorption of nutrients.

A liposome is described as a fluid-filled pouch, microscopic in size, which has phospholipids in its walls. These phospholipids are identical to those found naturally in cell membranes throughout the body. Liposomes can directly deliver substances to the cells and into the blood stream much more efficiently than the body is able to on its own.

The type of lipids that are needed for cell regeneration and repair in the body are also part of a liposome. As the modern lifestyle and diet have greatly impacted the health of cell walls, this aspect of the make-up of liposomes enhances the ability of the cells to take up nutrients and oxygen. The health of cells in the body is therefore improved as a result of liposomal delivery.

Research has shown that there are several life threatening conditions which can be effectively treated using a liposomal delivery system. These include Parkinson's disease, autism, Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, congestive heart disease and even aging.

Many nutrients and drugs are not absorbed very efficiently by the body and a liposome delivery system greatly enhances this absorption. For example, Co enzyme Q10 has an average absorption rate of three to five percent but when combined with a liposome, this increases to an incredible 90 percent or more.

Liposomal Encapsulation Technology or LET allows the active ingredient in many pharmaceuticals and nutrient supplements to reach the area of the body they are targeting. Many oral drugs and supplements are degraded during their passage through the digestive tract, limiting their strength and efficacy. Dosages can be reduced up to fifteen times the normal dose because of the efficiency of the system, saving money and reducing possible toxicity.

Supplementing with vitamin C is a good example of how well LET works. This vitamin is acknowledged as a powerful anti-oxidant and has been shown to be an effective treatment in a range of health issues. Vitamin C cannot be made in the human body so it must be taken in with food or supplements. Unfortunately, oral supplements of vitamin C have a very low rate of absorption and assimilation. Prior to LET, intravenous injection was the only way to get the high dosage and better absorption of vitamin C that was required. LET delivers the vitamin straight to the cells where it is needed and there are no adverse side-effects.

Nutrition companies have started to use LET in some of their oral dietary and nutritional over-the-counter supplements. Check out what is available in the liposome technology when shopping for supplements. Do some research into how to make your own liposome nutritional supplements yourself at home.
