Extreme Activities In San Diego

By Rod Bourgoine

San Diego offers plenty of seashore for those who enjoy splashing around in the waves and there are excellent shops and museums to enjoy, but if you crave a bit more adventure and excitement, you probably want to spend your time with some more extreme activities. San Diego also offers plenty of fun adventures for those who prefer a bit of danger or intensity along with their fun. Here are just a few examples of some activities that you might enjoy.

The vast San Diego County coastline is the perfect spot for some adventurous excursions. You can enjoy scuba diving and if that's too tame, consider heading out into the open water for a shark dive. While it's true that you will be in a protective cage, it's still fairly exciting when a Mako shark rams into the side of the cage. Another fun option is to take a kayaking trek throughout the waters and caves off of La Jolla. In addition, to these ideas, you can parasail or rent jet skis or even go water skiing. There are many companies that offer all of these fun options.

There are some great surf spots in the area, and the best waves are found at places such as Trestles, which is located in the northern edge of San Diego County. Black's Beach is another surfing hot spot to consider. Of course, if you really want to get extreme and ride some of the world's biggest waves, consider a trip out to the Cortes Bank. It's about 100 miles off the coast, but this tow-out surf spot boasts waves as big as you'd find at Waimea Bay or Maverick's.

You don't have to just stay by the water to enjoy some extreme fun. There are plenty of adventures to enjoy up in the air. Combine the fun of flying and the ocean by renting a jetpack and soaring as high as 30 feet above the ocean and then diving into the waves. There are quite a few excellent skydiving centers in the county for those wishing to truly experience a death-defying activity. You can even go on a fighter jet experience and take part in dog fighting maneuvers. While you won't actually be shot at, the planes are authentic fighter jets and the stunt flying is as real as it gets without actually being in combat.

San Diego isn't known for its towering mountain peaks, but there are still some great climbing and bouldering activities. Indoor rock climbing gyms are springing up all over the place, but if you prefer being out in nature, head to Mt. Woodsen for tons of bouldering. Mission Gorge is a great place to practice rock climbing, and this area is located right in the middle of the city at Mission Trails Regional Park.

If you love extreme sports, it would be wise to consider some extreme training. At The Arena MMA, you can train just as the professional fighters of mixed martial arts train. In addition to classes in Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai and boxing, The Arena offers a CrossFit gym and has developed its own intense strength and conditioning program called FightBuilt. This system was design especially for combat sports and it is about as extreme as it gets.
