From Art To Karate: After School Fun In Carlsbad

By Leigh Metopher

While we don't want to over-schedule our children's lives, it is definitely fun to try some cool after-school classes or activities. Not only does this provide opportunities for enrichment, they meet new friends, learn new skills and gain confidence. If you live in or near Carlsbad, here are just a few interesting afternoon options you might want to consider.

These days, parents are always looking for activities that keep their kids active and healthy, but not every child loves the idea of being on a sports team. For those kids, you might consider enrolling them in martial arts classes, such as karate lessons. Karate has physical benefits, providing cardiovascular exercise as well as improving a child's balance, coordination, flexibility and overall strength and health. In addition, there are many important mental benefits. Karate teaches self-discipline as well as self-control, and as students earn new belts, they gain a sense of accomplishment and improve self-confidence.

One local karate school to consider is Team Mai, which offers karate classes for students in Carlsbad, San Marcos, Encinitas and other local areas. Students of all ages are welcome to take classes, and they even offer after-school programs at ten local schools. The focus at Team Mai is teaching confidence, respect and discipline in a fun and exciting way. Students also will forge strong friendships with other students. The instructors encourage teamwork and cooperation and also provide plenty of fun social activities during their summer camps and special night events.

Most cities have a recreation department that offers a good selection of affordable classes and Carlsbad, Encinitas and San Marcos are no exception. Carlsbad, for example, hosts art classes that focus on painting, drawing or perhaps ceramics. They also offer dance classes and training for a variety of sports. There are plenty of options, so whether your child loves acting, crafts or science, there is something for everyone.

Performing arts classes are another type of class to consider for your child, and these activities appeal to many children and can be a great way to build confidence. There are several theater companies in or around Carlsbad and Encinitas that offer performing arts classes, summer camps or workshops. You can call and arrange a tour of businesses such as Kids Act, Prodigy Kids Performing Arts or perhaps the North County School of the Arts.

Of course, some children love to build or perhaps experiment within the world of science, and there are after-school options for these children, too. For instance, they can take Lego classes, where kids build robots, buildings and other interesting designs. Mad Science of San Diego provides after-school classes at elementary schools in San Marcos, Encinitas and Carlsbad, and children will enjoy all sorts of interesting science experiments during these classes.
