Self defense aspects of Brazilian Jiujitsu

By Sensei Ken Sumner

BJJ trains physical action of self defense almost exclusively. However in actual self defense, physical action is used less than 10% of the time. That's strange in that the actual training is only actually used so little. However it's not actually all that strange if you look at what other benefits and why this training style is so effective

The reason being is that most conflicts can be diffused or avoided altogether due to a person's confidence and how they respond to an aggressive person. When an attacker starts an attack, how the person responds to the aggression is a huge indicator on how the entire attack will go. If the person being attacked responds with confidence, this will change how the attacker will respond. This confidence that a person needs comes from the knowledge that they can defend themselves. If a person knows that they can defend themselves, they are much less likely to get involved in an altercation.

From this knowledge of being able to defend themselves, they have the confidence to stand up and say what is needed or to just stand up. This specific confidence comes from the Belt System and sparring practice that is employed by training Brazilian Jiujitsu. The Act of training martial arts, then having a distinct concrete reward after that training (the Colored belt). Essentially the self confidence comes from setting a goal, and then accomplishing it. This in itself is one of the greatest aspects to martial arts and accomplishes many of the mental sides like self Confidence.

Physical actions in a Self-Defnese Situation will be the backup in a physical altercation, which is why BJJ train the physical action so much.

However when the confidence, or words fail, then the actions need to take over. We have spent a lot of time travelling all over the world finding the most effective self defence. I had a student recently, 16 years old, traveled to Spain on a school trip. There she was in an encounter with a pickpocket. She tried to reason with this pickpocket, but then he lunged at her, trying to push her shoulder.

Reacting to this attack on her, she did exactly what she had trained to do, and was able to get him to leave her alone, plus her friend that she was shopping with. Brazilian Jiujitsu gave he the confidence to do this for both of them. She herself has said that BJJ was the defining factor in being able to defend herself on this trip, as well as giving her the confidence to actually go on the trip in the first place.
